Fielder homers, Hart robs HR as Brewers rally to beat Phillies

Baseball Betting Lines

08/05/2007 - Milwaukee, WI (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Prince Fielder's two-run homer in the eighth inning put the Brewers on top, and Corey Hart robbed Tadahito Iguchi of a potential tying homer in the ninth, as the Milwaukee Brewers edged the Philadelphia Phillies, 6-5, in the second of three games at Miller Park.

Fielder finished 2-for-4 with three RBI, and Ryan Braun also homered for Milwaukee, which has won two straight and remains one game ahead of the surging Chicago Cubs in the NL Central. The Cubs beat the Mets, 6-2, earlier in the day.

Derrick Turnbow (3-4) earned the win with an inning of relief, and Francisco Cordero notched his 34th save in 39 chances by tossing a perfect ninth. Brewers starter Dave Bush allowed five runs and eight hits, walked three and fanned four over five-plus frames.

Pat Burrell, Ryan Howard, and Greg Dobbs all homered for Philadelphia, which has dropped four of its last five games and remains five games behind the Mets in the NL East.

Cole Hamels allowed four runs and seven hits, fanned five and did not walk a batter over seven innings, but was denied his 13th win of the season. Tom Gordon (1-2) yielded two runs on two hits in the eighth and was also charged with the blown save.

Trailing 5-1, Milwaukee scored three times in the sixth inning to pull within a run. Tony Graffanino ignited the rally with an infield single before pinch- hitter Joe Dillon also followed with a base hit. Hart then struck out looking, but J.J. Hardy's double to center plated both runners, and a two-out single by Fielder cut it to 5-4.

The Brewers then struck for two runs off Gordon in the eighth. With one out, Hardy legged out an infield single to third. Braun popped out, and Gordon worked a 2-2 count to Fielder before leaving a fastball out over the plate that Fielder drove into the second deck in right field, giving Milwaukee the lead.

The Phillies looked to tie it in the ninth off Cordero, but Hart made a game- saving catch in right field, extending his glove above the fence to take a home run away from Iguchi for the second out. Jimmy Rollins then fanned to end the game.

Both sides traded long balls in the early going, as Braun connected on a two- out, line-drive homer to left in the first.

Howard evened the game at 1-1 in the second when he belted a 2-2 pitch off the black tarp beyond the center-field fence for his 30th homer of the year. Aaron Rowand then walked, and Burrell smashed a two-run homer to left that gave the Phils a 3-1 edge

Dobbs added a solo shot in the fourth that made it 4-1, then came home on Carlos Ruiz's double in the sixth to put Philadelphia up by four.

Game Notes

The Brewers activated newly acquired reliever Scott Linebrink from the bereavement list before the game, and designated veteran pitcher Elmer Dessens for assignment...Linebrink tossed a perfect seventh...Burrell extended his hitting streak to 13 games, and has reached safely in 27 consecutive starts. He has also homered in four of his last five games, including three straight. It's the third time in his career he's accomplished that feat (July 31-August 2, 2001 and April 9-11, 2005)...Rollins went 0-for-5, snapping his 14-game hitting streak...The sellout crowd of 42,126 pushed the Brewers past the two million mark in attendance for just the sixth time, and second-fastest, in franchise history.

Sportsbook betting odds favor Europe in Ryder Cup

September 19, – Despite holding a decided edge in the all-time series, with 24 wins, 2 ties and 10 losses, Team USA is the underdog again heading into the Ryder Cup in Kidare, Ireland this weekend, according to MySportsbook.com.  The Europeans have captured four of the past five editions, including their largest victory ever, an 18 ½ to 9 ½ thumping in Michigan in 2004. Current Ryder Cup betting odds favor the Europeans to continue their winning ways; they are a 4-5 bet to take the title, compared to 6-5 for the Americans.

Despite being knocked out in the first round of World Match play by Shaun Micheel, Tiger Woods is predicted to lead the US charge and be their highest point scorer for the week, with odds listed at 9-4 that he outpoints all other American players, including Jim Furyk, Phil Mickelson and Chris DiMarco to  name a  few.  Team USA has four relatively unknown players on the roster but all four are 2007 tournament winners and have posted some of season’s best performances, each earning over $1.5 million on the PGA TOUR.  They include Zach Johnson, Vaughan Taylor, JJ Henry and Brett Wetterich.

The experienced European squad includes the likes of Luke Donald, Sergio Garcia, Padraig Harrington, Jose Maria Olazabal and Darren Clarke, who’s emotions will be tested after the passing of his wife to a battle with cancer.  Donald and Garcia are in particularly good form and each is a 5-1 bet to lead the European squad in the points race. Donald has proven he can go head to head with Woods at a major event after a run for the $1.2 million purse at the PGA Championship. Garcia’s Ryder Cup credentials prove he’s ready for battle too.
